*NOTE - the numbers indicated for the year 2000 are taken from the 2000 CACC report. They oddly do not agree with the numbers listed for 2000 on the 2001 CACC report.

SUMMARY OF 2001 NUMBERS

INTAKE: Intake decreased by 4,707 animals or 7.7% over 2000

ADOPTIONS: Overall Adoptions is only 22.8% of intake and decreased by 1,455 animals. Rescue decreased by 1,806 animals or by 21.7% from 2000. ASPCA took out 42 fewer animals; NSAL took out 95 fewer animals than in 2000

EUTHANASIA: Represents 76.7% of intake in 2001; proportionately more than the 74.6% in 2000

OWNER SURRENDERED: 1,006 fewer animals were surrendered at the CACC shelters as "owned"

1,442 few animals were surrendered at the CACC shelters as "stray".

NOTE - 1,890 animals arrived DOA at the shelters in 2001; 1,798 in 2000. This is not necessarily the fault of CACC - but one wonders how many smothered to death in the trunk of police cars; how many were abandoned to the street to die by cars; how many were in dog fights; abused by people. Besides the unacceptable euthanasia numbers, this is a hideous number to deal with in a civilized society.
