    BRICK ‘N MORTAR SPAY/NEUTER CLINICS

As we’ve repeatedly argued, the only way for NYC to be a true “no kill” community is to stop the
flow of unwanted animals. This requires (a) an effective Humane Education program and
outreach, combined with (b) a campaign providing free or low cost spay/neuter (S/N) services in
neighborhoods that are epicenters of homeless animals.  We suggested that – in addition to the
S/N vans that the ASPCA sends out, either the City and/or private funding should establish
stationary S/N clinics in every one of our 5 boroughs.   These stationary clinics would be part of a
two-year blitzkrieg program to combat pet overpopulation.

Good news: the ASPCA is opening a stationary S/N facility in Glendale, Queens.  According to a
news report, the ASPCA (in combination with the Mayor’s Alliance) will track whether this new
facility will have a direct impact on reducing the number of homeless animals in Queens.

We also understand the ASPCA is renovating one floor of its East 92nd Street building to create a
S/N clinic.  The clinic is expected to open sometime in 2012.

Thus, with the ASPCA’s help, 2 of our City’s 5 boroughs will at last have brick ‘n mortar S/N clinics
offering low cost or free services.  That means, we have only 3 more boroughs to go.  Will other
organizations (or the City) step up and follow the ASPCA’s example?
