ShelterReform.org: Everything you ever wanted to know about the AC&C, but were afraid to ask.
            Targeted Recruitment in Brooklyn

We are happy to announce that we are developing specific
programming with The Brownsville Recreation Center and NY
Cares to recruit volunteers from the community to help in our
Brooklyn Care Center.  The programs include a 6 month
internship program for 18-21 year olds and a seniors program
with the Brownsville Recreation Center.  We will also be inviting
the center’s members to attend our monthly volunteer
orientations at the center.  If anyone has any other suggestions
of organizations to work within the community surrounding our
Brooklyn Care Center please let us know.
           THE MISSING AC&C VOLUNTEERS

On March 31, 2011, we asked the AC&C to publicize its urgent need for volunteers … in all
3 shelters, but most particularly in the Brooklyn shelter.   Two days later, AC&C issued the
following announcement:

We hope the AC&C proceeds quickly with “developing” its new Brooklyn programs.  In its
announcement, AC&C Management solicited suggestions on how to attract more
volunteers for the Brooklyn shelter.  In addition to our previous suggestions, here are some
more:

  • The Brooklyn Shelter is very near Queens.  The AC&C should target both Brooklyn
and Queens residents to become volunteers.

  • Expand the AC&C’s outreach by leaving flyers with and contacting::

Churches, synagogues, mosques, and other houses of worship near the
Brooklyn shelter.

Veterinary offices and educational institutions that specialize in public service
courses and degrees (e.g., NYC Wagner Graduate School, The New School, the
Rangel Center for Public Service at City College, any undergraduate university or
college where there is a large student body).

So far, we’ve addressed the need for the AC&C to get more volunteers into the 3 shelters.
In an upcoming article, we’ll discuss how the AC&C must do a better job at retaining
volunteers once they’ve been handed a volunteer ID badge. AC&C said there would be “a
lot more people” inside the shelters and that hasn’t happened.
 Does anyone know
where they are?
Apparently the attrition rate is disturbingly high.

We tumbled upon the following video. It may have been created for another animal shelter system,
but It expresses our concerns about the AC&C's Volunteer Program.
