Animal Care and Control Hearing Set
Wednesday, May 28, 1997 -- City Council Member Kathryn E. Freed, Chair of the Contracts Committee, today announced that the Committee will hold a hearing on Monday, June 16 at 11:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall to scrutinize the Center for Animal Care and Control's (CACC) $4.8 million City contract.
"In addition to an overall review of their operations, including their failed spay and neuter record and high record of euthanasia, I'm especially concerned that the CACC has been operating without an Executive Director for the past three months and under reduced management," Freed stated.
It is imperative that the CACC's Board of Directors select the most qualified individual -- one with a strong background in animal shelter management -- as soon as possible," Freed added.
In addition to raising serious management issues, the Committee is expected to ask CACC and City officials involved in its operations to describe its:
The City created the CACC in 1994 to assume responsibility for animal care and control services formerly provided by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. It receives virtually all of its funding from the City and reports to the Department of Health.
